Kawempe Muslim Secondary School .1989- 2002

Achievements

  • We empowered staff by encouraging them to upgrade their education qualifications and supported them for Hijja and Umrah pilgrimage.
  • We developed learners’ talents through the introduction of inter-house competitions.
  • We taught students and evaluated them through tests, seminars, and discussions. This helped them to demonstrate their learning as well as providing feedback on the errors they’ve been making. We went an extra mile to eliminate examination malpractices.
  • We had academic meetings where academic giants could share their reading skills as well as parents encouraging their children to work harder.
  • We struggled to make Kawempe Muslim Secondary school a science school by lobbying for good science teachers through the ministry or other schools. We also advised our best science students to apply for education who eventually came back and taught in the same school.

Academic Performance:

  • We improved the discipline of students and teachers by enforcing the school rules and regulations and instituting a strong disciplinary committee.
  • We initiated mentoring of both staff and students thus grooming them into heads of schools, deputy heads, university secretaries and students are in higher positions in the country.
  • We aided expansion of the school’s premises by buying plots of land where the new storeyed building was built.
  • We increased students’ enrolment due to improved accommodation facilities in the school thus improved performance.
  • We improved the school financial system and status by encouraging parents to bank school fees.
  • We created a strong career department which showed learners directions beyond Kawempe Muslim SS and helped them to make proper choices.

Infrastructure:

  • We boosted the school by constructing the first-storeyed classroom block which constituted the main hall, library, and classes.
  • We constructed the storeyed boys’ dormitory. This changed the school into a boarding school. We also constructed girls’ dormitories across the road which boosted the school too.
  • We aided expansion of the school’s premises by buying plots of land where the new storeyed building was built.
  • We put emphasis on a green environment by planting flowers, grass and trees around the school.
  • We improved on networking with sister schools through staff visits to emulate better practices by organizing inter-school staff visits.
  • We improved staff feeding by providing extra meals like tea after classes, delicious lunch, and other special meals during weekends. We believe this motivated teachers to keep at the station to assist learners.
  • We boosted sports by upgrading facilities like playgrounds by clearing valleys.

Administration and Management:

  • We designed the school vision, mission, and core values which helped in guiding the thinking and actions of employees.
  • We designed a clear organization chart with clearly demarcated duties and responsibilities which enabled a smooth running of the school programs even in the head teacher’s absentia.
  • We encouraged staff members to apply for promotions and helped them to identify and grab the available opportunities.
  • We planned our school activities at the beginning of the year and matched them with the budget.
  • We have a competent team of staff (hard-working, dependable and knowledgeable) which enabled the growth and development of both staff and students.
  • We organized Board of Governors, and PTA Committee meetings every term in order to have guidance from our bosses and as a requirement of the government.

Student Welfare:

  • We allowed boys to put on trousers so that prayers could be easier for them.
  • The current uniform was introduced to enable the girls to dress up appropriately for prayers and maintain their dignity and respect. It is now a national uniform in Muslim primary and secondary schools.
  • We phased out indecent dressing by introducing new uniforms. It brought order and easy identification of students.
  • We encouraged the young staff to get married by contributing heavily towards their functions and attending physically.
